Historic Castle between...
Adriatic and Apennines
Castello di Septe stands on a hill overlooking the Sangro Valley. Restored with dedication and declared a National Monument by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, today it welcomes guests into an atmosphere that seamlessly blends medieval charm with modern comfort.
A thousand-year-old castle.
Between history and legend
Castello di Septe stands in the territory of Mozzagrogna as an imposing witness to the Early Middle Ages. Built between the 6th and 8th centuries AD during the Lombard era, it was established as a strategic stronghold following the destruction of the nearby Roman city of Anxanum (Lanciano), on a rocky outcrop ideal for defense and territorial control.
Over the centuries, the castle served as a residence for prominent noble families and as an administrative and military center. Between the 11th and 12th centuries, it was linked to the Counts of Chieti and the Normans, and subsequently became part of the ecclesiastical estates, as attested by papal documents. Under Frederick II of Swabia, the territory assumed a central role within the royal demesne.
Through episodes of revolts, changes in dominion, and periods of crisis marked by wars, plagues, and earthquakes, Castello di Septe underwent centuries of transformation. In the eighteenth century, it became the property of the Genoino family, who transformed it into a refined country residence, a place for aristocratic life, social gatherings, and celebrations.
Following the tragic events of the Second World War and a long period of abandonment, the castle was purchased in 1989 by Adelio Cianfrone, who began a careful restoration, restoring splendor to its ancient walls.
Today, Castello di Septe is a place where history comes back to life: a monument of great historical and architectural value, capable of evoking suggestive atmospheres and welcoming guests in a unique and timeless setting.
